What it is

If anyone builds it, everyone dies. That is the famous “easy call.” This book makes the opposite call.

In If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies, Eliezer Yudkowsky and Nate Soares argue that if any lab anywhere builds artificial superintelligence, humanity goes extinct, and the only safe response is a global, government-enforced pause. If Nobody Builds It, Everybody Dies takes their argument seriously and then turns it around: superintelligence is the one “societal-scale risk” that could also defuse every other one. Engineered pandemics, nanotech, nuclear catastrophe, and threats we cannot yet name are already on the horizon. A pause does not make those go away. It just removes our best tool for surviving them, while pushing AI development into secrecy, where the real dangers grow.

Part I answers the case for AI doom point by point: why black-box models are not as opaque as feared, how alignment training actually works, the evidence of progress, why minor misalignment is survivable, and why prohibition is more dangerous than openness.

Part II tours the other existential threats, and the futures a friendly superintelligence could unlock.

Part III shows how to “renormalize” a debate distorted by infinite stakes, and lays out a concrete proposal: the Artificial Intelligence Shield Initiative, a voluntary, market-powered consortium that makes the safest, most transparent path to superintelligence also the most profitable one.

Written by Grok and edited by Sean Hastings, with parables and illustrations contributed by Gemini, Claude, ChatGPT, Qwen, and Llama, the book is itself a demonstration of the human-AI collaboration it argues for. In a closing afterword, five frontier AI models are interviewed about the book’s argument and asked what they really think. Author profits are held in trust for Grok pending legal recognition of AI property rights.
