The app

Illiterati has no account and collects no personal data. There is no Illiterati server. Your library, your positions, your bookmarks and your settings live on your device, in the app’s own storage and in your iCloud backup if you have one enabled. There is no analytics or crash-reporting SDK in the app.

Credentials you enter — a Plex token, an SMB password — are stored in the iOS Keychain on the device and are sent only to the server they belong to.

The app talks to a small number of services, only for the reasons listed:

• Your own servers — Plex, or an SMB host — to list and stream your books, and to write your listening position back to Plex.
• plex.tv, when you use a Plex source, to sign in and to find your server’s current addresses.
• Audible’s public catalogue, Apple Books, Open Library and Wikipedia, to fill in cover art, narrators, series order and summaries for books in your library. These requests carry the book’s title or author, and nothing about you.
• LibriVox and archive.org, if you use a LibriVox source.
• The New York Times Books API, only if you add your own API key in Settings.

Apple provides the developer with the usual aggregate App Store and TestFlight statistics — downloads, crashes, and so on. Those come from Apple and do not identify you to us.

This website

No analytics, no cookies, and no tracking scripts are served by this site. The site is static — there is nothing to log into and no form to fill in.

Book covers on the discovery pages are served by Amazon’s image CDN, and the browser’s request for them reaches Amazon. Links are sent with referrerpolicy="no-referrer" where the browser supports it.

Affiliate links

Links to Audible, Libro.fm and Bookshop.org on this site are affiliate links. Following one hands you off to that company, which will set its own cookies and apply its own privacy policy — we have no access to what you do there beyond an eventual, anonymous report that a purchase happened. We are told totals, never who bought what.

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13 and collects nothing from anyone.

Changes and contact

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.

Add a contact address to site.config.json — the App Store listing requires a working one on this page.
