What it is
Some bridges carry you across a river. Others seem to carry something with them.
For C. S. Eubank, bridges have always been more than steel, stone, timber, and concrete. They connect two places while somehow belonging completely to neither. And some of them leave behind a feeling that is much harder to explain.
In Silent Crossings, Eubank travels to thirteen remarkable American bridges, from the historic Sachs Covered Bridge at Gettysburg and the shattered remains of Pennsylvania's Kinzua Bridge to the soaring Royal Gorge Bridge, Florida's legendary Bellamy Bridge, Indiana's Avon Haunted Bridge, and the remnants of the railroad crossing at the vanished town of Moonville.
Along the way, history meets folklore. Engineering achievements stand beside ghost stories, local legends, tragedies, and unexplained experiences that have followed some of these crossings for generations.
But Eubank isn't out to prove that bridges are haunted.
He simply goes there.
He walks them. Stands beneath them. Learns their histories. Listens to their stories. And occasionally finds himself wondering whether everything about an old crossing can really be explained by wood, stone, steel, wind, and imagination.
Part travelogue, part history, and part journey into the unexplained, Silent Crossings is for anyone who has ever stood in an old place and wondered whether the past was quite as far away as it seemed.
Cross the bridge. Learn its story. Then decide for yourself.
