What it is

It was written to win one state's vote, on a printer's deadline, four essays a week, sometimes finished the night before it went to press — and it barely worked. Outside New York City almost no one reprinted it. The publisher was still sitting on unsold copies months after the vote that mattered was already decided. The book that Americans now treat as the authoritative explanation of their own Constitution was, in its own moment, a rushed piece of campaign literature that mostly failed to persuade anyone who wasn't already persuaded.

This edition presents the complete text: all eighty-five essays, in the numbering established by the original 1788 book edition, with the paragraph divisions of twenty-one essays restored where later reprintings had silently altered them. Every footnote in this volume is Hamilton, Madison, or Jay's own; no editorial note interrupts the essays themselves.

A critical study by Henry Bugalho, "The Fourth Author," treats the pseudonym Publius as a genuine problem rather than a formality: three men, writing against deadline, not always reading each other's essays before publication, produced a text later generations read as if it had a single coherent mind. The study follows the decades-long dispute over which of the essays Hamilton or Madison actually wrote, through to the statistical methods that finally resolved most of it, recomputed here directly against this edition's text.

A life of Hamilton, Madison, and Jay, and a Note on the Text detailing the copy-text, the attribution policy, and every repair made to the source, complete the volume.
